Dami Oke is a Ph.D. candidate of biomedical engineering at the George Washington University with an interest in communication and outreach for science advancement. She is an ASBMB Today contributing writer.
What is your research focus?
“Addressing medical device bias across skin tones.”
What is the broader impact of your work?
“Promoting health equity.”
How has being a member of ASBMB helped you along the way?
“I have been exposed to unique opportunities that are building my professional portfolio, such as being a volunteer contributor to the ASBMB Today science magazine; speaking with various science experts on their research work and professional journeys; and engaging in other activities like the science communication and outreach course.”
What are you watching/reading outside the lab/work?
“It’s a throwback from my childhood: 'Superbook'.”

“'Passion + Purpose Podcast' with host Louie Giglio.”
What have you learned from your work that applies to the rest of your life?
“Stay the course. See things through. You’ll never know the payoff unless you get to the end. Also, seek out the random opportunities that seem to be outside your initial research or academic work; they all seem to tie together in the end and make for a more well-rounded you.”
